Nude - Beauty Bared
Interview with nude founder Bryan Meehan

With the successful organic food brand, Fresh ‘n’ Wild under his belt, Bryan Meehan’s latest venture is a foray into the beauty world. Far from dipping a toe in the water, Bryan has jumped right into the skincare market with a splash creating runaway success, Nude. Launched in 2007, Nude already has a loyal celebrity following, including Oprah Winfrey. Impeccable green credentials, innovative ingredients and responsible formulations make Nude one of the most desirable beauty brands.

Ali Hewson (Bono’s wife) is your muse, but even muses must have an off-day! Did you agree on everything conceptually with Nude?
Ali is the personification of nude. She is a brilliant inspiration and I have never seen her on an off day which is why she is a very special and unique muse. She was instrumental in designing the nude shape which was expensive to do especially in an environmentally friendly way. She was so right because it’s gorgeous and groundbreaking.

Producing responsible skincare is the long way round. Were there any compromises you had to make?
There were no compromises. All our suppliers said “you can’t do that” when it came to briefing them on 100% synthetic free formulations and biodegradeable packaging. I think it helped that I had no previous experience in the industry. If I had worked for a major cosmetics brand before I probably would have agreed that we couldn’t do it. However, we pushed and pushed and managed to produce some products (like our night oil and cleansing facial oil) which are 100% synthetic and preservative free. We did have to use a preservative system in any product that contained water but we were able to use preservatives that were approved by the organic bodies like Soil Association and Ecocert.

Most of our products are now either 100% synthetic free if they are made without water or 99% if they have water. We did manage to do a biodegradeable sleeve, that took a while and when we were almost at the eleventh hour, we had to pull it as we were concerned about getting it perfect. But Annmarie Harris our superstar marketing manager spent many sleepless nights sorting this out and we succeeded.

So we are left with a groundbreaking range and rather than speaking about compromise I like to say that we are less than perfect. Because I would like a 100% post consumer recycled packaging, I would like no preservatives but we have pushed the boat out so far and now that we have a wonderful outcome, we are going back to our suppliers to demand more. Their response? “You can’t do that….!”

The facts
NUDE packaging is made in China, Korea and Europe and shipped where possible to our warehouse in the UK. It is recyclable and 40% of the range is made using 50% post industrial recycled plastic. Our sleeves are biodegradable corn starch and weight and shape of our bottles means less wasted space during shipping and less emissions.
Any printing is UK based using green energy and non-toxic water soluble inks and our sales consultants wear uniforms that are made using organic cotton from an Africa reserve that supports wildlife and the local community.

We are also carbon neutral (scope 1, 2 and working towards measuring scope 3) and part of this is offsetting our emissions with gold standard Kyoto approved projects. Some of the projects our money supports include hydropower and wind power operations in China (where our packaging is made) and renewable energy and forest protection projects in Brazil (where many of our beautiful ingredients come from).

In terms of Carbon footprint, our products are all made in either France or the UK. We manage our supply chain to minimize transport (our sleeving, gift packing and warehouse are within a couple of hours drive from each other, and from London where our UK stores distribution centres are).

We do acknowledge that there is no perfect solution to making products using ingredients and expertise from around the world but we felt the footprint of small, light quantities of individual ingredients was much less than a fully manufactured and filled product. We chose our labs based on excellence as well as proximity to the UK so once again, there is little transport needed. For our US market we are setting up a warehouse in Texas (nice and central) so we are able to ship our products there for distribution.

It is not for us to say what's justifiable or not for another company or person... and as previously stated, there is no perfect solution and the products need effective ingredients to deliver results, not all of which can be sourced locally.

At the same time, when formulating nude, we made a decision not to go organic. Right now certified organic skincare uses a lot of potentially irritating ingredients like Alcohol, glycerin and synthetic food based preservatives like Sodium Benzoate.
In addition, right now you cannot certify beautiful actives like natural milk peptides (for collagen production) or pre and pro biotics (for a healthy skin acid mantle) so the nude standards in our stamp below is what’s important. If you see this seal below you know you are getting the very, very best in skincare without the harmful ingredients your body would rather not absorb.

What is Nude’s biggest selling product?
The award winning nude Cleansing Facial Oil and Advanced Eye Complex with instant smoothing results.

What’s underway in the Nude pipeline?

We are working towards 100% post consumer recycled packaging. We have some fantastic introductory Christmas collections available very soon and watch this space for a Men’s range.

Any plans to venture into colour cosmetics?

Yes, most certainly. We are just launching nude in Sephora in USA and then Japan, Hong Kong and Australia next year. As soon as we complete this, we plan to launch our colour range… it will be unique.

Your Nude desert island essential?

My wife Tara and my three girls Olivia (9), Eve (6) and Orla (3) oh yes and a boat to get us home!

Do you have any fashion vices?

Edun, naturally.

Who is your beauty icon?
Christy Turlington. She is a beautiful person; natural and very supportive.

Are you an online shopper?

Never for clothes as I need to try them on and hate sending stuff back. Always for services. I think my daughters will end up using the web for everything, it’s the future. My three year old is already using it!

Manicure or Massage?

Massage. My favourite is with Mitsutoshi my Japanese friend who does incredible Shiatsu.
