Interview with dr. sebagh
For me, beauty is harmony and confusion of the senses. For example, you can see a beautiful woman and be amazed by her, until she talks to you and you don't like her voice. Suddenly, she's not so beautiful any more. And then you see another beautiful woman, but you get closer and realise that you do not like her scent, and there's no way now that you could ever describe this woman as beautiful. We are driven by pheromones in our attractions to people - if the smell doesn't work, you can't be in love.

Beauty is in all five senses, not just one. You can be attracted to someone with a hook nose, who doesn't possess the perfect features of a model, and still find them beautiful. There isn't just one look we consider beautiful, such as the traditional Western look of blonde hair and blue eyes. We appreciate the beauty of a host of different looks Caucasian, Asian, and African.

My job involves 'ageing maintenance'. I take care of beautiful women who want to stay beautiful for as long as possible. I only take people on for treatment who already feel good about themselves. I can help to slow the ageing process down, but I can't stop it. Ageing maintenance is not supposed to change the face, but to substitute what you lose. If you are losing a bit of volume in the cheeks or in the temples, it can be replaced. And unlike plastic surgery, everything is reversible.

I have a lot of time for people who want to age gracefully, but we have the science to improve the process. With this technology, I can engineer emotional beauty. I can keep the emotions on your face. I work subtly, so the face maintains its mobility, it's a very difficult thing to do. It's like architecture: I have an eye for proportion and shapes. I can see light and shade in a face. Anyone can do Botox, but can they do a good job with it and stop you looking like a clown? A facelift can take away volume and flatten the face, but volume is what gives a face vitality, so that is what I would replace. Skincare will give you the glow.

Meaningful beauty is taking care of yourself. Your skin ages like everything else, but that ageing process can speed up, depending on your lifestyle. The collagen fibres break down and we don't know how to replace them. But with radio-frequency treatment, vitamin injections, skin peels and skin care we can improve the skin's appearance.

I once read in a book that beauty is when you are able to go through the face, when nothing in the face stops you. That is what I try to achieve. And if I see a smile on the face of a woman, then I am happy.

Dr Jean-Louis Sebagh divides his time between Paris and London. A plastic surgeon for 20 years, he’s now known for his non-surgical procedures and a burgeoning celebrity client list. His unique and effective formulations in the Dr Sebagh Age Maintenance beauty regime have made it a best selling beauty must-have. Beauty Expert has managed to steal a moment of his busy day to find out a bit more about him and his lifestyle.

You reportedly don’t believe in miracle skin creams, but do believe that a good skin cream can make a real difference. How so?
All skin needs to be fed properly on a daily basis. We need four types of active ingredients in any skincare regime - anti-oxidants (e.g. vitamin c), hydrators (hyaluronic acid), rejuvenators (anti-ageing peptides), and environmental protection (EPF and sunscreen). Of course, a good moisturiser to restore the skin barrier is essential.

Do you use your own skincare range, and if so, which are your favourite products?
Yes, of course! I use Supreme Maintenance Serum Concentrate which includes all the ingredients mentioned above in a high concentration. I top up with a moisturiser that suits my skin type, and always use the Deep Exfoliating Mask once or twice a week.

If you could choose only one skincare essential to take to a desert island, what would it be and why?

I cannot choose just one, so I would need to pick Supreme Maintenance Serum Concentrate and of course, for a desert island, my Sun City Sunscreen!

Are there any special new Dr Sebagh products in the pipeline that you can tell us about?

Yes, I am going to launch Rose de Vie Oil Serum, which is a replenishing, calming, soothing serum with very powerful anti-inflammatory active ingredients. Its main function is to fight the damage caused by free radicals while restoring the skin barrier. The result? Beautiful, silky, smooth skin.

You travel between London and Paris frequently. Do you travel light, or do you need the full set of Louis Vuitton trunks?
I travel very lightly as I have apartments in both London and Paris.

What do you love most about London? And Paris?
I love English people and the working energy in London. And, I love Paris because it is laid back and the most beautiful city in the world for weekends.

Do you ever shop online?
Yes, of course.

What was your last internet purchase?
I buy books, CDs and DVDs, as well as ordering theatre and cinema tickets.

BlackBerry or iPhone?
BlackBerry definitely, I can't live without it!

Cake or Chocolate?
Definitely chocolate (only dark) twice a day, at 5pm and midnight.

Love or Money?
Love is essential, any form of love - personal, family or work, but money brings freedom.
